Vacancy Title: Library & Archive Volunteer
Ongoing project until 2010
Duties: cataloguing books & archives, translation, shelving & labelling, computer data entry.
Job Summary:The Bowes Museum is currently preparing to launch its new library and archive facility. A new purpose-built reading room in the dome of the museum will bring together the museum’s varied collections for consultation by curators and the wider public. The library collections include Joséphine Bowes’ personal collection of rare French books, the local history collection, curators’ reference books on art, sales catalogues and a number of periodicals. The substantial archive relating to the personal lives and collecting activities of John and Joséphine Bowes and the running of the museum compliments these collections. All are to be catalogued electronically for the first time and to be made available on the internet.
The Bowes Museum has always depended on volunteers to help run its library and the scope of work to be done is now greater than ever. Volunteers will gain valuable work experience in a developing specialist research library and/or archive.
Application: please send a letter or telephone Judith Phillips on 01833 690606. Email: library@thebowesmuseum.org.ukTo be kept informed about The Bowes Museum please click here
