The John and Joséphine Story

In 2003 the galleries on the east wing of the first floor were refurbished and redisplayed to tell the story of John and Joséphine Bowes. Although The Bowes Museum is full of their objects and collections, the actual story of John and Joséphine’s life in Paris had never been told. These galleries already displayed objects from their various homes and this project brings then to life with new interpretation and display. The first gallery tells the story of John’s childhood and family background, the second moves to Paris and his life-changing encounter with Joséphine and features a grand dinning room suite. The third gallery features a stunning bed that belonged to Joséphine as well as some of her own paintings – she was a keen and talented amateur painter as well as an accomplished actress. The final gallery features objects purchased by the Bowes at international exhibitions and also houses conservation interactives for family audiences.
