Punch Bowl with the Bowes coat-of-arms, 1725

 

The coat of arms is that of George Bowes (1701-1760), great-grandfather of John Bowes, co-founder of The Bowes Museum, and his first wife Eleanor Verney. George Bowes appears of to order a quantity of silver at the time of his first marriage. Eleanor Verney was fifteen years old when she married George Bowes in 1725. She died three months after her marriage. George Bowes was grief-stricken. He did not remarry until 1743. The bowl was presented to the Bakers and Brewers Company, Newcastle by George Bowes in 1736. The date and circumstances in which is left their collection are unknown. The bowl came of the Museum's attention in was a heraldry enquiry. The Museum declared an interest in buying and asked for first refusal if the owner decided to sell. He approached the Museum some years later. The price was reached by negotiation. Purchased from a private collection, with grants from of Victoria and Albert Museum Purchased Grant Fund, Friends of The Bowes Museum and from Durham County Council. Size: Height -  21 cm; Width - 31 cm.
