Racing Cup, 1840

Circular bowl shaped form, on either side of the cup is a handle in the form of a prancing horse with flowing tail and mane, the hind legs resting on outward curving scrolling acanthus leaf fronds which rise from two repousse acanthus leaves covering the two sides of the cup. The stem of the cup is similarly cast and applied and with acanthus leaf ornament which is raised on a square plinth with concave sides and canted corners, one side of the cup engraved 'The Earl of Uxbridge' and underneath 'Lord George Bentinck' bracketed together as 'Stewards' , the other side inscribed 'Wolverhampton Races 1840. The Cleveland Cup'. One side of the base impressed 'William Hay, Wolverhampton'. Size: Height - 40 cm.
