Jug

Of amphora shaped form narrowing towards the neck and flaring out to form a high projecting helmet shaped lip and rim, and the foot in conical form. Decorated with a grotesque male and female mask heads and terns, wild beasts and elaorate scrollswork, acanthus and laurel leaves, berries and foliage. The upper part of the foot engraved: 'Presented the 1st January, 1831 to Cuthbert Rippon of Stanhope Castle, Esquire by inhabitants of the Parish of Stanhope as a small acknowledgement of his public spirited and successful services in preventing H. Phillpotts D. D. from holding the living of Stanhope in commendam with the See of Exeter'. Engraved round the collar with a coat of arms; a chevron between three crossed crosslets presumably the arms of Rippon. Size: Height - 25.7 cm.
