Spice Box, 1610

The cover of the spice box is chased as a scallop shell, at the radial point of the shell a dolphin sports amid waves it is enclosed within a stamped tongue and dart border and hinged to a plain-sided box shaped to suite the cover, edged at the base with a similar stamped tongue and dart border. The whole is raised on four feet in the form of four upturned scallops cast and applied. The cover is fitted at the front with a hinged rectangular hasp, its end terminating in a scroll. The hasp fits over a loop attached to the front of the box. Purchased of the assistance of MLA/V&A Purchase Grant Fund. Size: Width: 14 cm.
