Day Dress
Dress of cream silk, trimmed with bright blue silk, 1868-70 This is a good example of a summer afternoon or promenade costume, as it has a short, round skirt without a train. The double skirt is formed by a separate overskirt, which has been gathered into the back vertical seam, to form a bustle effect. The dress has been altered and the gathered blue silk trim appears to have been added at a later date. Two long sash ends cut from the dress have survived, which may have formed part of a belt. The bright blue colour was very popular and is another example of new aniline dyes.
