Day Dress
Dress of cream cotton sateen, printed with a design of cupids and pink roses, 1878-80 This is a one-piece dress, which achieves a narrower silhouette, the new style at the end of the 1870s. From a ruched panel at he front the hip drapery swathes around to the back where a long gathered vertical section creates the bustle. The unusual printed fabric is perhaps part of a revival of the eighteenth century 'figured chintz', which became popular in the 1870s for looped up 'polonaise' styles, which resembled an eighteenth century form of dress.
