Marquetry Panel: The Grand Canal, Venice
These quayside scenes have recently been identified as the Grand Canal, Venice, following the works of the late 17th century engraver Melchior Kussell. The marqueter has used a Kussell print for the background and a modern print for the figures of merchants, gondoliers and Oriental men.
The marquetry is double layered, suggesting that it was produced in sheet form for sale to a cabinet maker.
