Marquetry Panel: Architectural Scenes
Part of a pair of panels incorporate marquetry and paint to create an architectural scene. Appropriate woods have been selected by the craftsman, such as olive wood, which imitates veined marble.
The marquetry is double layered, suggesting that it was produced as a complete composition in sheet form, for sale to a cabinet maker. The cabinet maker would then have applied them directly to the panels, which have since warped.
