Bellamine Jug, c.1575-99
Stoneware
German, Raeren
Height: 56 cm.
The body of the jug is moulded with horizontal ribs upon which three medallions are modelled in shallow relief. Roberto Bellarmino (1542-1621), who became a Cardinal in the Roman Catholic church in 1599 was unpopular in many northern states because he upheld the Papal teachings against those of the Protestant Christian reformers. The moulded masks and the rotund shape of such pots were meant to depict the Cardinal.
