Chair

A late 17th century chair, English or Flemish in origin. The frame is of turned and carved walnut, and the seat and back are caned. The front legs have paw feet, and the back legs are slightly raked. Woven cane was introduced for chair seats and backs during the second half of the 17th century. The canes are split into thin strips and interwoven to form an openwork, resilient surface. Originally a large mesh was used, but a smaller, closer mesh was adopted before the end of the 17th century.
