Walnut Armoire
This walnut armoire (cupboard) was acquired by John Bowes on a short trip to Italy in 1875 following the death of his wife Josephine in Paris the previous year. It was purchased from T. Gagliardi of Florence, and the bill describes it as follows: '1 large antique walnut armoire from the Ducal House of Parma'. Its heavily carved decoration includes carved and pierced scrolls, fruit and flowers, egg-and dart, acanthus, and scrolling foliage which form handles to the lower and side drawers.
