Door Handles
Pair of cast bronze door handles of serpentine shape with relief work decoration. The handles came from Wemmergill Hall Co. Durham, demolished in 1989. Each have scrolling acanthus leaves border the whole. Two lions, facing to the left and with outstretched claws, occupy the upper and lower sections respectively. At the centre is a shield, surmounted by a crown, cross, and a scallop shell. It possibly bears the initials of Kaiser Wilhelm, who visited Wemmergill c. 1895 and for whom the house was rented by his friend the Earl of Lowther as a shooting-box. The base is cylindrical, tapering out towards the handle, with decoration of acanthus leaves. Size: Length: 13 cm; Width: 5 cm; Depth: 6.5 cm.
