Japanned side chair
A beech side chair with cane seat and back sections, the wood varnished and painted in imitation of oriental lacquer. This European imitation of original lacquer is known as 'japanning'. Chairs similar to this example are known to have been supplied by the royal cabinet maker Giles Grendey (1693-1780) for the Spanish and Portuguese export market. This chair is part of a pair.
