Nominations for Committee

The Friends of The Bowes Museum are seeking new committee members with appropriate expertise and enthusiasm to join the team in May. If you are interested and have been a Friend of The Bowes Museum for at least one year please write to the Friends Office, The Bowes Museum, Barnard Castle, Co. Durham DL12 8NP or email friends@thebowesmuseum.org.uk  by 14 March 2010.  In the meantime if you would like to know more about committee work then please call the office on 01833 690606 ext 233 (voicemail).  The office is usually staffed on Friday mornings.

Newsletter alteration

There is a small error in the current Friends' newsletter (Issue 38) at the top of page 14 for which we apologise.  This is the article by Elizabeth Conran, where the first line on that page should read 'In March 'A Miracle of the Sacrament' will go on loan to an exhibition in Siena' rather than 'In February ....'

When this painting returns in July it will probably be re-exhibited at The Bowes Museum with the same accompanying material as is on display now - so for anyone disappointed to miss it over the next few weeks, there will be a later opportunity to see it.

The day includes: Tour of the Hall (stout shoes are advised as this is a moated house), Lunch at the nearby Cascade Bistro and an afternoon visit to either Littlethorpe Potteries or local Gardens. When booking please state preference, as numbers are limited for Potteries. The coach will leave The Bowes Museum at 9.00am and pick up at Scotch Corner Hotel approx 9.15am. Library and Archives Reading Room Open Days
Friday 19th March 1.00-4.00pm and Saturday 20th March

Over 130 people visited the new Library and Archives Reading Room during the two Open Days at the end of November. We couldn’t accommodate all who wanted to come, but are now providing two more opportunities. These offer another chance to see the spectacular views, learn about current and future work, and enjoy a small display of documents and books. Numbers have to be limited and (though first notified here) are not restricted to Friends, so you need to book in advance.

2010 Concert Programme

To assist The Museum and as a special effort for the Anniversary year, the

Friends Committee have agreed that the Music Group can spend money raised

from their 2009/2010 Concerts to help with the restoration of selected early

keyboard instruments in The Museum’s collection. This project has already

started and it is anticipated that the first of the restored instruments will be ready

for Concert Royale to use at their concert next March here at The Bowes

Museum, preceded by a weekend residency by this group.

Next year we shall be asking for donations for this project; details will be available

in each Newsletter, and we hope that you will agree that this is a suitable way for

the Friends to assist The Museum to provide enjoyment for all, now and in the

future, and will give generously.

Finally, The Music Group would like to offer you the opportunity to enjoy four

concerts for the price of three, for the Concerts to be held in March, April, May

and September.  Details of this offer and booking form will be in the

2010 Concert Programme which will be included with the Spring Newsletter.
