Spring update

Spring has Sprung!

 
2008 looks set to be an exciting year for learning at The Bowes Museum. Preparations are being made for the development of a brand new Education Suite this summer, which will see the current learning space transformed into a state of the art classroom and separate studio for practical work. There is however, much more to come between then and now, so read on to find out about our forthcoming events and workshops for schools and lifelong learners.
 
Alfred Sisley: Impressionist Landscapes
 
Come and see Alfred Sisley: Impressionist landscapes and learn about an acclaimed member of the Impressionist movement. Museum visits, Artist into Schools sessions and Arts in Focus workshops will be available during term time from 19th May to 19th September. Pupils will be given the opportunity to explore Sisley’s paintings and even have a go at trying out the techniques he used. For more information and to make a booking, please contact the Education Department.
 
Much Ado About Nothing
 
The Mad Alice Theatre Company is set to return to the Museum this summer, to present an open air performance of Shakespeare's comedy Much Ado About Nothing
 
Set in North East England in the 1950's, come and enjoy the ‘merry war of wit’ between Beatrice and Benedick, witness the joy and despair of the young couple, Hero and Claudio, and revel in the hilarious antics of Dogberry and The Watch. With Teddy Boys, live music and the conga to add to the fun don't miss out on what will prove to be an unforgettable experience of one of Shakespeare’s best loved romantic comedies.
 
Suitable for upper Key Stage 2 and older, this hilarious romantic comedy will engage and enthral pupils and teachers alike. Matinee performances will take place on 13 June 1.00pm and 7 July at 10.00am & 1.00pm. There are free pre-visit outreach workshops led by a professional actor available for the first 10 schools who book the performance. (Minimum 10 pupils per workshop). These will be provided on a first come, first served basis. Please contact the Education Department for further details.
 
Museum Detectives
 
The evil Phantom Claw is planning to destroy all historical exhibits with his Thermal Rubidum De-Atomiser and The Bowes Museum is on his list for destruction! In this is teacher-led murder mystery activity children must solve a series of numeracy puzzles located around the galleries to stop the Phantom Claw and save The Bowes Museum. This is an ideal activity to complete on a self-guided visit or after a staff-led museum session. You will need to watch your Museum Detactives DVD at school before you take part For more information and to make a booking, please contact the Education Department.
 
 
 
Storytelling Weekend
 
Mythical Monsters
Saturday 24th and Sunday 25th May 2008: 10.30 – 12.30 and 1.30 – 3.30
 
Prepare to take a mythical monster journey around the world with a storyteller! With tales of giants, ogres, trolls and beasts dare you visit The Story Garden?
 
Tickets cost £5 per child, £3 per Cygnets Kids’ Club member. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Price includes one adult, accompanying each child participating to get in the Museum free of charge on the day.
