Arts in Focus - Education Programme for KS 3-5
The Museum is keen to boost attainment at KS 3-5 and has developed the Arts in Focus
programme to aid this.
Work with a professional artist in a practical session tailored to your student’s needs, set in the Museum
environment. The sessions combine theory and practice by using the building and collections to explore
works on display and practise specific techniques.
These workshops are available all year round but please book early to avoid disappointment.
A teacher thought that the work completed with an artist in the Museum would....
'improve their skills of observation and attention to detail and appreciation of pattern to improve appearance'
A pupil described her experience of working with an artist as....
'interested, I have always wanted to be a good painter, now I understand.'
To make up your individually tailored package choose both a theme and a technique and then give us a call.

Useful to ‘share and discuss ideas. Having gallery staff genuinely interested in encouraging schools into the Museum.’
Most memorable …‘Beautiful views and amazing building – intriguing artefacts!!’.

Artist-led Landscape Workshops for KS3 – 5
Once you have chosen a technique to work with from the menu in the Arts in Focus section, students will study both the Museum’s collection of landscape paintings and the natural landscape in order to create their piece of art.
Naked Bodies: The Art of Representing the Nude Figure
The Bowes Museum is continuing its successful life drawing session specifically aimed at Key Stage 5 pupils. Working with an artist, pupils attempt the art of drawing the nude figure before using their new experience to help them explore and compare artworks in the collections that portray the human figure from the Renaissance and Rococo periods.
Funding from DCMS provides four FREE sessions for Naked Bodies and six FREE sessions for Landscape. Once all free sessions are gone, further sessions will be charged at £3/head.
'The continuing line drawings[...]helped me a lot with my drawing skills. I don't always have to look at the drawing now, I have time to look at the object.' KS5 pupil
