Education at The Bowes Museum has a new look! The brand new education suite has been developed with state of the art facilities and fantastic resources providing the ideal base for your school visits. We now offer 'Hands on Arts,' a programme which will enable you to combine an exploration of the inspiring collections with a practical workshop on site.
What does the 'Hands on Arts' package include?
An education pack of pre-visit and follow-up activities based on your chosen topic.
A full day in the Museum with a member of the Education Team, including a half-day workshop exploring the collections linked to your chosen topic and a half-day practical workshop learning the skills and techniques linked to your study focus.

Suitable for Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1
Toys from the Past
A hands-on workshop looking at toys throughout the ages with the chance to make your own peg doll.
Suitable for Key Stage 1 and 2
Pattern Power!
Explore patterned decoration in the galleries and have a go at printing your own designs.
Portraits and Portraiture
Learn what portraits can reveal from pose, settings and accessories and try out self-portrait techniques.
Suitable for Key Stage 2
Contain Yourself!
Examine the history of containers, discover their practical and decorative uses and create your own container in clay.
Fiction on Fabric
Look at portraits within the Museum and discover what they tell us about people, then try creating your own self portrait in a fabric collage.
Greek Myths and Legends
Explore the history of the Greeks. Discover mythical stories and legends through the museums collections, and then create your own Greek artefact.
Green and Pleasant Land: Watercolour Landscapes
Discover the history of landscape painting from the fourteenth to the nineteenth century, and try your hand at creating a watercolour masterpiece.
Paintings, People, Action!
Explore action scenes in some of the Museum's fantastic paintings and recreate the figure in movement through sculpture.
Take a Seat
Learn about the different parts of a chair, discover its design history and make your own model inspired by the Sedan Chair.
Want something different? Please contact the Education Department where we will discuss your requirements and endeavour to provide something tailored to your specific needs.
Costs
Museum Visit (explore the collection) - £3.00 per child
Morning session: 10.00am-11.30am or Afternoon session: 12.30pm-2.00pm
Hands on Arts Package (explore the collection and craft session) - £4.50 per child, including materials.
Full day session: 10.00am - 2.00pm
Self Guided Visits
Self guided visits must be booked through the Education Department on 01833 694602. The charge is £2 per child and up to 5 adults are free, the charge will include an Education Room where available. Subject specific education packs are available to support your self guided visit at a cost of £15 each.
Free Pre-Visit
You and a guest are welcome to visit the Museum for free to help you prepare for your school visit. Please telephone in advance to book your place to ensure you are not charged.
Schools cancelling within 8 days of the booked session will be required to pay full session costs.
The Museum Network E-Learning
Four e-learning units on the themes of Portraiture, Landscapes, Greek and Roman Myths and Materials have been created through The Museum Network partnership. For more information please visit www.museumnetworkuk.org
