The Bowes was designed and purpose-built as a public art gallery by the French architect Jules Pellechet. It opened in 1892. The Museum has public galleries on three floors. Select where you want to go next by clicking on a floor below.
Ground Floor
The ground floor is devoted largely to The Streatlam Galleries (which serve as an introduction to the museum's collections); Cafe Bowes; the Shop and reception.
First Floor
The first floor houses collections of European fine and decorative arts; the John and Joséphine galleries and the stylish new Textiles & Dress gallery. There is also a temporary exhibition space on this floor.
Second Floor
On the second floor you will find the second temporary exhibition area, along with major collections of paintings, ceramics and musical instruments. The Silver Swan is to be found on the second floor, adjacent to the magnificent Silver & Metals gallery.
