150th anniversary of the laying of the Museum's foundation stone

150 years ago the foundation stone was laid for The Bowes Museum.

The ceremony on Saturday, 27 November, 1869 was small, with only 5 people present, including the Museum's founders John and Joséphine Bowes.

As Joséphine placed a silver and ivory trowel on the stone she said: "I lay the first stone and you, Mr Bowes, will lay the top stone".

Sadly neither John nor Joséphine lived to see the Museum open to the public in 1892.

One hundred and thirty one youngsters from five Teesdale Primary Schools have taken part in a day of musical celebration at The Bowes Museum.

The children from Butterknowle, Cockfield, Evenwood, Ramshaw and Woodland visited Norman Cornish: The Definitive Collection and worked with different specialist artists, partially funded by Arts Council England, to produce, what will become, a soundscape for the exhibition.

They then performed their work in the Blue Picture Gallery for visitors to enjoy.

The day also marked the beginning of a wider community project funded by Teesdale Area Action Partnership and Northern Heartlands.
