Become a Young Curator at The Bowes Museum
Our Young Curators programme offers the opportunity for young people to learn about the Collections at the Museum, to work with different members of staff on projects as well as plan and deliver events for engaging young people with the wider Collections at the Museum. Currently we are looking for 10 young people to become our next Young Curators from July – December 2021. To apply for this opportunity you must be:
- Aged 15 – 25 years old.
- Be living in the North East of England.
- Be able to get to and from The Bowes Museum.

Young Curators Creative Workshops Day, Saturday 26 June 2021
Meet our Young Curators and take part in free creative workshops including, clay, porcelain, architecture and drawing!
Join us on Saturday 26th June, on the back lawn (directly behind the Bowes Museum).
Workshops and session times all listed below.

Nature & Clay workshops
If you are between 15 - 25 come and create something beautiful inspired by pieces from The Bowes Museum’s Ceramics Collection. Using air-drying clay and nature you will press flowers, leaves and foliage into the clay surface to create a floral piece of pottery. Choose a design inspired by the pottery within the museum or use your imagination. This workshop is an hour long so you can take your time to sculpt, shape, press & refine your work to take home with you. Spaces are limited, booking required.
Session times for Nature & Clay: (1 hour, all materials provided)
- Session 1 – 10.30 – 11.30
- Session 2 – 12.00 – 13.00
- Session 3 – 14.30 – 15.30
Pattern & Porcelain workshops
Using ready-made porcelain pottery, you will use porcelain pens to draw a design onto the surface. Taking inspiration from the ceramics collection, we will have flowers, leaves & foliage on hand, which you can ink up, & press onto your porcelain piece. Join us if you are between 15 - 25, you can take the porcelain pottery home to be finished in your own oven (instructions card will be included).
Session times for Pattern & Porcelain: (30 minutes, all materials provided)

- Session 3 – 12.30 – 13.00

Mrs Bowes Mansion – Architecture Talk and Drawing workshop
Come and join us for a talk on the architecture of The Bowes Museum given by Simon Spier, followed by a drawing workshop led by Artist Melanie Kyles and the Young Curators. Inspired by the themes in the talk we will reimagine and redesign The Bowes Museum. Free but booking essential. Suitable for young people aged 15 -25
